Although I have children adopted through the foster care system, I have learned a lot about the other side of foster/adoption since those adoptions. The majority of parents who lose their children are never prosecuted for abuse. Why, you ask? Because they did not abuse their children. Some neighbor or relative decided they were not raising the child the way they would do it and called CPS to accuse the parents of "neglect." The majority of parents are not doing drugs (or could be helped to get clean) and are not punching or kicking their kids or starving them. They simply chose to raise their child in a different way than their neighbor. CPS will find a way to make a case if someone calls. They will make sure that child is placed with total strangers, destroying that child's psychological safety forever.
I am now very interested in changing "the system" to a system where children are kept with their parents if at all possible (which is most of the time) and if not, extended family should care for them. Placing children with strangers, especially if it is forced adoption, is wrong and needs to be stopped. Check back soon for more information.
